A sunny day when you are reading in a small cafe in Vancouver, sipping your coffee, and the rain is drumming a tune on the window and telling you something.

Suppose you find some hidden trail in the Rocky Mountains. The track divides into two, and you have the option to choose either a winding, chattering hike or a stiff climb to a viewpoint where your entire attention is required.

Imagine you are sitting on an old Adirondack chair on the foggy shore of Georgian Bay, writing wildly with your notebook while the wind whips the stories out of the water.

In a summer night under the stars, fireflies glow like tiny lanterns. One spark pulls you in, the other fades into the dark. That’s what tone does in writing. It’s the glow that makes your words shine or vanish.

As clichéd as it may sound, no instrument in the digital age beats the power of writing. Every word that we cobble together makes our world.
